Want to help your students with managing the pain and symptoms of PCOS?

Yoga and Yoga Therapy are effective interventions for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Through reducing stress reactions and improving neuroendocrine function yoga can assist students with pain relief and the associated stress from the symptoms of PCOS. (1)

The practice of yoga postures, mindfulness and meditation, as well as breath focused practices can help our students who are feeling exhausted and overwhelmed by this condition.

PCOS is a common disorder that affects about 20% of women. However, this condition is often underdiagnosed so it is important to get a correct diagnosis. It affects the menstrual cycle and can often affect fertility.

Some of the signs and symptoms of PCOS are: irregular or absent menstrual cycle, acne, excess body and facial hair, hair loss, heavy menstrual bleeding, weight issues, headaches, pelvic pain, poor sleep, blood sugar dysregulation and fatigue.

The cause is unknown however family history, stress, and insulin resistance are common factors.

Yoga can be effective at assisting students to deal with pain, anxiety and stress associated with PCOS. One recent study demonstrated that 3 sessions a week of mindful yoga practice reduced free testosterone levels which might help reduce excessive hair growth and acne, as well as reduced their anxiety scores (2).

Feel confident that yoga practices can provide therapeutic benefit to our students with PCOS.
