Everyone talks about video marketing as one of the most effective way of engaging customers. People talk about what kind of videos you should make, people talk about the content of those videos, tools you can use and so many different other things.

All the above mentioned things are important, specially for the organizations who can not afford to hire the media production houses and have to rely on their own capabilities. But when it come down to the actual video shoot, few things can drastically improve the final output. Here is a list of things to remember.

Subject Clothing

Solid colored clothes are best when it comes to video. This is for the simple reason that it does not distracts your audience. Try avoiding bright colors, big logos, funky prints. Select your clothing based on the kind of video you are making as a blazer can send a different feel in comparison to a hoodie.

Video Lighting

This one is probably the first thing your audience will notice in your video. Make sure the light coming onto the subject of the video does not cast any shadow on the face. Do not place the subject directly underneath a source of the light.

Good results can be achieved by placing the light source in-front of the subject on the level just above the eye line.

Video Background

If you are using a backdrop screen then it is advised to use a dark colored background. Colors like dark gray, pastel blue, soft green are better than bright colors like red and orange.

If the video is shot in a natural setting then avoid moving objects in the background. If your camera has a good lens with a wide aperture then you can blur the background as well.

Audio Quality

Good sounding audio is a vital part of any video. Common problem that arises w.r.t. audio are echo and different voice levels if you have divided the video in multiple shots.

Echo — Usually the empty rooms with bare walls create echo. Try to avoid rooms made of glass with nothing to absorb the sound. The best way is to have things like curtains, cushions, bean bags, soft boards and moving blankets kind of stuff. These things will absorb the sound and reduce the echo considerably

Audio level — Often when the subject is too far from the shooting equipment or at different distance, the audio level varies. An oscillating audio levels can be managed in three ways. Use a mic to record the audio or use a tool to adjust the level of the foreground voice. If voice levels are too low to increase, doing a voice over is the best idea.

Camera Position

From the countless images we have taken using our phones, we know that low angle images rarely looks good. Same applies while shooting a video, the camera need to be placed just above the eye line of the subject. Not too low and not too high.

Maintaining a decent distance from the subject with lens just above the eye line also ensure that.

Camera Stability

Shaky video can ruin the best of the video content. Use a height adjustable tripod stand and if you don’t have access to a proper tripod stand, a small one(gorilla pod) or a selfie stick can also help. Because of the cushioning provided, the jerks get absorbed and a finer output is achieved.

And last but not the least, your video needs to tell a story.
