Today we introduce you to one of the first promising rejuvenation therapy candidates and to the research on parabiosis.

What is parabiosis?

Parabiosis means connecting circulative systems of two individuals together. It gained the attention of a research community in 2005 when a study reported that the circulatory system of a younger mouse was able to rejuvenate an older mouse. Main organs affected were muscles, liver, heart, and the brain.

Does it work on humans?

Since then, plasma transfusions have been tested with humans suffering from Alzheimer’s. Treatment was found to be safe and showed improvements in some activities in daily living.

However, this was the preliminary phase 1 trial with just 18 people, so any results should be analysed with caution. Based on the positive findings, second phase trials are testing a fraction of plasma that in animal models proved to be more potent than full plasma.

Future

Clearly there won’t be enough blood plasma to treat millions of neuro-generative disease patients. Instead, the efforts are directed to find the key signalling factors that could be translated into drugs benefitting all of us.

The results of parabiosis research is carried further with ongoing controlled trials on Alzheimer patients in Poland and Ukraine. There is also a company named Ambrosia, which is administering plasma infusions for $8000, but we can’t recommend it due to lack of clinical trials and evidence.

We will keep you updated when new results are made public and meanwhile introduce you to other even more promising rejuvenation therapy candidates!

Next step.

Take action.

The research stemming from parabiosis is still in an early stage, but you can do something now to promote its development.

You can donate your own blood. Minor side effects after donation are related to the drop in blood pressure, e.g. dizziness and nausea but they should disappear within 72 hours. The main positive health benefits are:

  1. Get a free health checkup and blood panel in case of sicknesses provided by the blood donation company.
  2. Reduce iron levels and blood pressure if they are elevated.
  3. Potentially give someone the priceless gift of saving a life.

The act of giving back.

We are creating a Facebook group to share experiences around active pursuit of health, and invite you to join us!

The group is about exchanging knowledge, best practices, mutual help, and anecdotes in various fields like nutrition, exercise, mental wellbeing, sleep, supplements, intermittent fasting, or stress management, but also in more scientific topics like genetics, biomarkers, and rejuvenation therapies like senolytics or this week’s topic parabiosis. Join our group now.
