Yoto Talks TED: Dave Eggars on Collaboration in Learning

At Yoto, we’re big fans of learning and research. In fact we are slightly obsessed with sharing interesting content — particularly from the likes of TED. In this series of blog posts, I will be sharing some of our favourite TED talks with you, and discussing why they might be relevant to you as parents and fans of Yoto.

Dave Eggars on collaboration in learning.

Firstly, Dave Eggars is a brilliant and funny man. He’s also though very inspiring, and in this TED talk he presents how he looked at a different way of sharing knowledge in a way that inspires people to develop themselves. He built a centre in San Francisco for kids to come along to and get one-to-one centre alongside a publishing house. And they all worked together — sharing and cross-pollinating. The key for us here is that there are loads of ways to learn — and by creating new ways to get people thinking and absorbing information is key. Our education system is not perfect by any means — and Dave shows that despite some initial reluctance to learning within a Pirate Supplies Store (yes, really) in the end it works out incredibly well.

We’re inspired by this because Yoto is new. We’re incredibly excited by it, and how it might change the way in which kids develop through play and interaction. And we also know it might take time for people to realise this. But just like Dave, and his Pirate Supply Store, we’re going to persevere because we know this makes a whole bunch of sense. M’hearties.
