4 a.m. Overdose Reveals Selfishness of Addiction
What happened when I woke up (in more ways than one)
At first, I heard the usual raised voices of a couple arguing around 2:30 in the morning. About two hours later, I woke up again. This time, I saw people across the hall attempting to resuscitate an unresponsive man.
One of the ladies who lives down the hall from me had a supply of Narcan nasal spray. She inserted the spray into the passed-out, almost-40-year-old’s nose.
The contents in the nasal spray bottle helps people in case of a possible overdose. This doesn’t mean the person did O.D., but either way, it can help a person.
Fortunately, the man who appeared to be unconscious, woke up after a few minutes. So did I — in a new way.
This 4 a.m. incident, which may or may not resulted because of an overdose, made me realize how selfish I can be. I recalled a conversation I had with the one who was passed out and his girlfriend.
The night before, this couple asked me if I wanted to go get dinner. I used the excuse that I just got home, so I didn’t go with them.
Then, this man’s girlfriend asked, “Are you going to a meeting tonight?”
