As I leave Mobile World Congress (MWC) from sunny Barcelona, I keep cycling through the many conversations that were had on the show floor, at the conference, and throughout the various social events during the week.

There’s one topic I can’t shake: faster connection speeds.

As you can imagine, this is music to my ears not only as a user but as a someone who constantly pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in cross-platform video streaming. Nothing kills a premium experience for one our customers’ apps more than a poor connection.

As Reed Hastings said during his interview at MWC, we’re moving towards a future where all video will be viewed online, and I tend to agree. Video is already the biggest contributor to internet traffic, with global traffic set to reach 90% by 2020.

Just look at the recently announced, YouTube TV, a new skinny bundle service from Google that is designed for mobile-first. It’s a huge step into the future where mobile and video go hand-in-hand.

How close we are to this future may be up for debate depending on who you ask, but I think everyone is in agreement that streaming video on-the-go is a critical part of the consumer experience; now considered a habit that can’t be ignored. It’s the reason why 5G and the concept of unlimited data caps on video streaming were the talk of the town.

Being able to watch your content, when you want, where you want without draining your wallet is the make or break for many buyers when deciding which carrier to go with. Being known for a quality of service that enhances that user experience will most certainly drive affinity for certain providers, if not loyalty. And that’s good for everyone’s business.

Luckily, after attending MWC and seeing the dedicated efforts to redefine what the mobile experience should be, it’s obvious the user is now in the driver’s seat. That pleases me both personally and professionally.
