Welcome YouAlberta’s “Have You Met” series in collaboration with @ualbertastudents! Every other week we’ll get to know a student from the University of Alberta.

Have you met Tyson, a third-year Bachelor of Science student and member of Youreka Edmonton? Spend the next few minutes getting to know him a little bit better!

What three words best describe your U of A experience?

Dynamic, active, growth.

Why did you decide to study your major?

The opportunity to pursue an undergraduate thesis in psychology. I am interested in the brain, particularly how we can use testing methods like EEG and ERP to measure direct results of manipulations, beyond participants’ subjective realities.

What advice would you give to your first year self?

I would tell myself to stop comparing myself to others, or worrying about what they think! Everyone carries a burden we don’t know about — so be easy on them, and be easy on yourself.

You can invite anyone — alive or dead, real or fictional — to dinner. Who would it be?

Leonardo Da Vinci — and not just to pester him about why he didn’t finish the Mona Lisa. From what I know about him, he had an interest and talent in so many fields — anatomy, architecture, philosophy for just a few — beyond his art. I think it would be incredible to discuss any subject with someone that is so curious, insightful, and gifted.

What is your favourite way to unwind after a long day?

A long run — no headphones or audiobooks, just thoughts.

What do you miss most about campus/in-person classes?

I miss the spontaneous social interaction — seeing people in the halls and stopping to catch-up, finding that one person you can sit beside in a tough class, or looking forward to hearing about a friend’s day during study time. It just doesn’t happen during online school!

What are you most proud of?

In my first year on varsity cross country, our men’s team made it to nationals in Kingston. I was humbled to be part of the team travelling to compete, and it ended up being one of my better races of the season. I am really proud of what the team built up to throughout that season, culminating in our final race.

What’s one thing you can’t live without?

Noise-cancelling headphones.

What is your go-to study snack?

Trail mix — the bigger the Costco bag, the better!

Who inspires you?

This one is easy (if I can choose two people) — my mom and sister! We’ve always been a tight knit family and I don’t think I will ever realize how much they have inspired, and continue to inspire, me through their work ethic and compassion.
