Are you a person that worries about going to a new environment? Are you picky about your food? Trying to stay healthy? Trying to maintain a diet of yours? Well you are not alone.

Food plays an important part in our lives and while traveling may be fun especially being able to see and experience new things, eating can make or break the trip.

A few tips:

Do your research ahead of time

If you have any food allergies, sensitivities, intolerances, make sure you look up different restaurants in the area of your hotel, airbnb, etc. You may not always have data, service, and/or wifi so save it to your phone. You’ll thank yourself later!

Great apps to use: Yelp for traveling within North America, Foursquare if you are traveling abroad!

Bring snacks

Need a snack but not sure if you can find something to fit your needs? Bring snacks from home! Anything that’s packaged is easy to throw in your purse or bag and you never know when you’ll suddenly get hungry, so avoid the hangry monster before it begins!

Open your mouth

Always ask if they can alter something on the menu. There’s a saying, “If you don’t speak up then how is your own mother supposed to know”. Take the initiative and ask, and let them know of any dietary restrictions. Its part of their job to serve you, so do not feel embarrassed.

Don’t be afraid to indulge

How many times do you have a chance to travel and experience a new culture? It sure doesn’t happen every day! So whether you are in Italy and eating countless amounts of gelato and macaroons, or in Portland,OR enjoying the endless amounts of food trucks, think ahead. You are there for a few days so do not eat everything all in one day. Try for a balance while indulging. Do you know you’ll be having gelato or a donut after lunch? Opt for a healthier option for lunch to enjoy your treat without going too overboard. Not only will you feel better but your stomach will thank you.

Note: trying new foods that you are not used to on a daily basis can cause an upset stomach so try new foods in moderation, not everything at once!

Use the YouAte app

*Disclaimer: after falling in love with the app, I started to work with the YouAte team! Currently while traveling the country, this app has helped me watch what I eat and enjoy all the new foods that different states have to offer.

While traveling you become mindless of what you eat and when. Time becomes irrelevant because we are caught up in the new sights and experiences. By using a food journaling app not only do you get to record what you eat and when you eat it, but you refer back to your day based on foods that you have tried!
