1) Who the hell are these influencers?

Influencers are individuals who are able to influence a large number of people. And it is not just regular celebrities. Thanks to social networks “anyone” can grow a huge fanbase and reach amazing visibility. Digital influencers are seen as examples and models to follow especially among teenagers.

2) Where to find them?

On social networks. Vlogging is most frequent among influencers. The power platform is of course YouTube with the equivalent of 64 years of videos uploaded per day. Facebook and Instagram are racing to increase their video-views. Even if Vine and Snapchat paved the way for short videos hegemony for a few years a new trend is already rising: live video. As a result, each social media tries to find the innovation (or at least they try to copy it from another social media) that attracts people at that time.

3) Who are the most famous video influencers?

Here is the top 5 of Youtube influencers. Visit socialblade.com for a fresh ranking!

  1. The most famous video influencer is the Swedish PewDiePie. He has 54 Million subscribers and almost 15 Billion views on his channel. That’s crazy! Ask the New York Times (840,000 subscribers) if it is not dreaming about such figures. There has a been a bit of a hussle around him lately. Check out the story here.
  2. German Garmendia is a Chilean YouTuber. He acquired nearly 49.5 Million subscribers and 7,5 Billion views thanks to his two channels: HolaSoyGerman and JuegaGerman.
  3. ElRubius: This Spanish guy currently has 23.6 Million subscribers and more than 5 Billion views on his YouTube channel ElRubiusOMG. Vlogging and video gaming, the magical ingredients for success.
  4. The 4th place goes to not 1 but 2 YouTubers: Ian Hecox and Daniel Padilla. Because it´s funny to make videos but even funnier to make it with your best friend! Anyway, congratulations for their channel Smosh which cumulates 6.3 Billion views and 22.6 Million subscribers.
  5. Luis Fernando Flores alias Fernanfloo: Another of those Spanish speaker who mastered the art of entertaining. With 20.3 Million subscribers, he has 3x more subscribers than the population of El Salvador where he is from. Not forgetting his 4.7 Billion views also.

Special mention to Logan Paul, Kingbach who became real stars on Vine, Instagram and Facebook.

4) How did this all happen — the hype around youtubers etc. ?

The power of Word of Mouth is nothing new. Most of the influencers became famous just by posting videos about topics that were interesting to them. What is new is that thanks to social media an ordinary Joe from Behind the Hill can influence crowds around the world. Likes, Shares, Comments, He does not need more than an engaging video and YouTube algorithm will do the rest. Simply put, influencers are the new media. And for that matter, new creative agencies as well. And brands love it.

5) Does influencer marketing work for any type of product?

Just look for Call of Duty, Assassin’s Creed or the last Final Fantasy XV game on YouTube and you’ll find plenty of videos reaching millions of views. Yes, most of the current brand-influencer collaborations are about games, beauty, traveling or technology. Damn it, when you think a teenager is earning more than you thanks to her last video “How to look exactly like Kylie Jenner”…Don’t worry we have an office job as well! However, if we consider how much internet interferes in the purchase decision making, it is obvious that there are no limits to influencer marketing. At the end, there is only one success parameter: ROI.
