The main idea behind marking June 5 as World Environment Day is so that we are aware of what is needed to be done to protect our environment. The day raises awareness about the environmental issues like global warming, marine pollution, human over-population, protection of wildlife, and sustainable consumption. World Environment Day was established in 1972 by the United Nations on the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment, resulting from discussions on the integration of human interactions and the environment. Two years later, in 1974 the first WED was held with the theme “Only One Earth". People celebrate World Environment Day (WED) in many different ways all over the world: planting trees, cleaning up local beaches, organizing meetings, joining online protests. Each year the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) chooses a particular issue to focus on.
