Animal

Girafee

Habitat

India has around 30 giraffes in 11 zoos in cities such as Kolkata, Mysore and Pune. The massive giraffe enclosure at Alipore Zoo in Kolkata draws the largest crowds. There is no record of when giraffes were brought to India but sculptures exist in temples, including the 13th century Sun Temple in Konark, Odisha. The tallest animals on Earth, Giraffes, are a major attraction of the Mysuru Zoo. Now, Mysuru Zoo — one of the oldest in India — has transformed into a breeding hotspot for giraffes in the country, with as many as 22 calves born in captivity till date

Physical Charecterestics-

These tall animals are identified by their long necks, equally long and spindly legs, and spotted coats. Most giraffes have a tan, white or yellow coats that are spotted with brown, square shapes. Giraffe horns, called ossicones, are unique among mammals. At birth, all giraffes have knobs of cartilage on their skulls, covered by skin and hair. As the animals grow, their horns grow larger and turn into bone. Used for fighting, male horns grow thickest and add weight to their heads when butting other males. They also have a dark, thick prehensile tongue, meaning it can twist and wrap around, and grab things.

Food-

While leaves make up the majority of the giraffe diet (more than 90 percent in the wild), the animals do sometimes graze on grasses. But, like drinking from a watering hole, this presents a challenge.Giraffe are predominantly browsers and mainly eat leaves and buds on trees and shrubs. They will also eat herbs, climbers and vines, and prefer flowers and fruit when in season. The proportion of grass in their diet is very low.

Facts-

Giraffes are the tallest mammals on Earth

They can run as fast as 35 miles an hour over short distances, or cruise at 10 mph over longer distances.

A giraffe’s neck is too short to reach the ground.

Giraffes only need to drink once every few days.
