What to do on a long weekend (Saturday, Sunday & Monday), when you live in a city with many beautiful surrounding places around? This was a question for us too.

After going through various blogs and travel sites, we ultimately decided to go to Pondicherry. Pondicherry or Puducherry (Pondi) is a small French town on the Coramandel coast of India, around 300 km from our city, Bangalore. It is famous for its beaches, culture and food. But our main reason was only and only BEACHES, bitches!! :p

We started searching for the ways to reach pondi and tried every way to reach the destination but it seemed like we were late to the party. We couldn’t find bus, train or even a zoomcar. After a wave of “nirasha”, a friend suggested to do a bike trip. Neither he was serious nor we were…But out of FUN and due to no other option, we all agreed to his thought. And our search began for the bikes.

After an overnight search, we finalized to DVK Biking. This was the cheapest option we could find in Bangalore. And all this happened on Friday night — Saturday morning. :D

After finalizing our medium of travel, we set out on our journey at 2 AM on Sunday(We didn’t start on Saturday coz a friend has 6 days a week job…MEH!)

After an hour of riding, our bums started giving up. (DISCLAIMER/SPOILER: RIGHT IN THE BEGINNING — YOU MUST HAVE STRONG BUMS TO DO SUCH BIKE RIDES :P) We stopped at a McDonalds on the highway. After feeding ourselves, we switched the riding positions and set on the journey again.

Few things to keep in check while doing a bike trip —

  1. Make sure you wear proper clothes and gear (primarily helmets) while riding bikes. We all wore full sleeves to keep us safe from fast moving wind that passes by while riding as well as bright sun in the morning.
  2. Make sure to keep your maps handy on each bike as bikes tend to separate often on highways. Or else, make a code of staying in visible distance from each other.
  3. Don’t carry much luggage as you won’t find any place other than your shoulders to hold on.
  4. Take proper rest before the beginning of trip coz bike rides are very tiring.

We missed out on 2nd point and got separated on highway. Out biking pairs were “me and mandi (MnM)” and “utsav and dangi(UnD)”. After a little deroute, we got back again (Thanks to location sharing service of Whatsapp). Following the google map, we took a diversion for State Highways which was under construction. Over that, we were riding at night with no prior experience of roads or biking. (YES, We never ride bike earlier, it was our first time :D). Due to lack of ride, we couldn’t see bad roads and UnD slipped while braking their bike suddenly. Thank God, they jumped the bike and nothing happened to them. Even bike got a bit scratched and nothing happened. We started again!

While continuing on bad road for quite a bit, we came across a beautiful scenery in the middle of a village. Since it was a early morning, the traffic was close to none and so we parked our bikes in middle of the road (Highway :/). We started clicking pictures of ourselves with the scenery around but forgot that we were on a highway. After some time, a passerby complained about us to local authorities and a policeman came to us to take us to police station. After apologizing a lot and promising him to not repeat the mistake, , he set us free. The main problem was that there was no language common between us. So, it is better to CARRY someone along who knows local language :P. Though we were scolded, we managed to click some beautiful pictures for us :D

Since it was a long ride, we kept on switching the driving seat. After some time, we finally touched a national highway and then got going. We reached pondi at around 11.30 AM. We were so exhausted that we wanted to take rest before heading to the beach. Since it was a long weekend, we couldn’t find cheap hotels and had to finally settle up for a Rs. 2500 room in Hotel Palinsamy.
