The top 10 office facility grumbles
“It’s too hot in here can we please turn down the heater?”
“But I just came in from outside and it’s freezing cold, I’d like to get warmed up!”
In the office I used to work for this was a common argument for employees who’ve already settled into the office for some time and those who just came in soaked and cheeks flushed on a freezing winter morning. Turns out we were not the only workplace often having this discussion. Us Brits don’t mind a good moan!
The International Facility Management Association (IFMA) surveyed its members for the top 10 office complaints related to facilities and maintenance. The results aren’t too surprising given that you and I have most likely complained about these too in the course of our own employment, but here they are in case you were wondering what employees moaned about the most aside from being bored, underpaid or overworked:
- “Too hot”
- “Too cold”
- Poor janitorial service
- Not enough conference rooms
- Not enough storage/filing space in workstation
- Poor indoor air quality
- Lack of privacy in workstation/ office
- Inadequate parking
- Computer issues
- “Too noisy”
Take note employers and managers, some of these issues don’t need a board meeting to be fixed, or at least improve the situation. While it’s impossible to have everyone reconcile on the ideal office temperature or ban all non-work related chatter, you can do something about other items on the list.
Take for example janitorial services. Even if there is a regular cleaning and maintenance schedule, everyone should be held accountable for tidying and organising their own workstations and adapting a “clean-as-you-go” attitude when using the loo, pantry and other common areas.
The number one complaint of being “Too hot” might be one you’re hearing (or saying!) a fair amount at the moment, now it looks like summer may have actually arrived. If your office doesn’t have a decent air conditioning system, then consider getting some portable units in. Bearing in mind our UK weather, it may seem expensive for something that will probably only be needed for the sum total of about a month, but we all know how being overheated can make you feel lethargic and grumpy.
