Synopsis

Eulachacha Waikiki is the story of three young men who run a Waikiki guest house in Itaewon, South Korea. The first guy, Kang Dong Goo, is a cynical man who often lets out hurting words due to his bad luck, despite that, he is a warm and kind person at heart. He wants to be a movie director. The second guy, Bong Doo Sik, dreams to be a scenario writer, however, things are not working well for him as the story progresses. The last guy, Chun Joon Ki, pursues a career in acting. He often encounters many strange and funny experiences from his acting gigs as a rookie.

One day when the guest house almost goes bankrupt, they find a baby girl left by her mother inside a vacant room. Upon seeing the baby, the three men freak out because they have never taken care of a baby before. At first, they want to give the baby to the police. However, later that night, the baby’s mother, Han Yoon A, comes to pick up the baby and says sorry for leaving the baby behind. They decide to accept the baby and her mom out of pity. Later on, their story is merrily colored with many unpredictable funny events that left the viewers laughing.

Plot Analysis

Eulachaha Waikiki is one of the comfort dramas that I have repeated countless times. This drama is so funny, light, and sweet. While Doo Sik and Jun Ki are busy being a dumb and dumber duo, it’s obvious that Kang Dong Goo is the only sane one despite being downright sarcastic about his friends’ unexplainable behaviors.

Each episode of the drama always presents a different theme and character. For example, in episode 1, they show how the three men clumsily take care of baby sol. Meanwhile, in episode 2, they focus on showing Kang Dong Goo’s heartbreak after being harshly dumped by Min Soo A. Therefore, it’s always new and fresh, and I feel like they adopt a sort of American sitcom vibe that I never maintained from previous Korean dramas.

Waikiki is a slow-paced drama, hence why we can only find the joke after understanding the whole context of the story. And sometimes, it’s also delivered implicitly which makes it interesting. They also add a little bit of romance to complete the Kdrama, and it is simply pleasing but still focuses on comedy as the main genre.

Characters

When this drama was first launched, all of the actors & actresses were newcomers. However, they all managed to prove their seriousness in this project. Overall, all of them nailed the characters. The main characters also complete each other. Kang Dong Goo is the sarcastic one, Bong Doo Sik is the pure and clumsy one, and Chun Joon Ki is the funny, prankster, and sly one. They are made for this role, and I could not imagine Waikiki without this trio.

Original Soundtrack

Eulachacha Waikiki Original Soundtrack varies. They have OSTs that are just deep and complex to change the funny ambiance to sad ambiance so the viewers can understand the characters’ struggles’, but they also have sweet, heartwarming, and romantic OSTs too. To shorten it, here are my top 3 OSTs from Eulachaha Waikiki:

  1. Waikiki Wonderland — Ulala Session
  2. Would You Come In — MIND U
  3. Cheer Up — Choi Sang Yeop

In conclusion, this drama is a certified 10/10 must-watch Kdrama no buts, I have to say that this one is a Jtbc masterpiece because I haven’t seen anything like it when it is being aired. This drama will comfort you with funny unexpected scenes on your rainy days. Hope you enjoy my review!
