How to Design an Ecosystem of Success?
The first half of the year is gone.
Most people, 95% exactly, give up on their Resolutions for the Year even before January has ended. Are you part of the 5% that by now has momentum going strong for them?
Don’t feel discouraged if you are not, TODAY is the perfect opportunity to start. But how?
Creating good habits is the key. But this process is not only related to the repetition of actions until the habit is created. It is also about shaping the environment around us in a way that in return it shapes our decisions and mindsets. You must design your habits and those in return will design your success.
Jason Silva can probably explain it better:
I want to share an experience that may help you create an environment for great habit creation.
Not so long ago I entered an ecosystem of health and success without even knowing it. I was living in Panama and made the decision of joining a local CrossFit gym. I started training there at 6am because it was the only time that my worked allowed me to.
Keep in mind that I was NEVER a morning person. My mother couldn’t believe what she was seeing when she visited and saw me wake up happily at 5:30 am weekly.
I must confess that, for me, it is never easy to wake up that early. But not long after joining I found myself waking up every morning at 5:30 am energized, just because I didn’t want to miss out on the class (yes, fear of loss motivates more than the desire to win) and the fun we had as a group.
It was a group class that had people from different countries and different ages, from 17 to 60+, all together because of the tribal sentiment that had started to develop within the group. All together because of our desire to be healthier, support each other and have fun while pushing ourselves outside of our comfort zones.
Later I decided to move from Panama, in search of taking my career to the next level, and I must confess that I haven’t been able to find an ecosystem like the one that was created within that group, the AjoooTeam.
I recently was listening to a TED Talk Sebastian Junger gave and I understood what made that group so powerful. He states that what Veterans miss is not the war but the intense experience of connection that is made, with their platoons, during war. It is that same intense experience of connection we must create in an environment so that it can keep us wanting to come back.
Two thing you can do TODAY, so that during the second half of the year you can be part of the 5% of people that are generating a momentum of success are:
- Design Carefully: You have to be aware of all the elements that are part of your environment (work, school, gym, house, etc.) and understand how exactly they are influencing you. These elements can be things or people. Once you know how those elements affect you then you must decide if you want to empower or diminish them.
- Connect Mindfully: Take the time to get to know every person that is part of your environment, discover their stories and be interested in them. This will help you start building the connections that later will make you all stronger individually and as a group.
The AjoooTeam is a great example of this process of creating positive momentum. Thanks to the efforts of their leader, and community, they have been able to grow from a class of 15 people to an online community of almost 10,000 members.
I am very grateful that I was able to meet Joey and learn from him, and that I can be a member of such an amazing group of people. I am not so sure If he was grateful to meet me because now he gets second place in most of the competitions we do, like the weekly Fitbit steps competition!
Learning and sharing knowledge is my passion, let’s connect if it’s yours too.
Send me a message if you would like to be part of the fun at the weekly Fitbit competition.
