Let’s Create a Difference with Intersectionality
Why can’t women have the opportunity to build a strong relationship with each other without using intersectionality? Women are still fighting for intersectionality, one of the biggest terms in support of feminism movement. Intersectionality determines domination of other sector such as discrimination or oppression that can be within a society. In the 90’s, segregation was increasing in the workforce due to gender and race, were the demographics of being both an African American women was looked down upon.
According to the article, “Why Intersectionality Can’t Wait” by the author Kimberle Crenshaw, explains the reasons that African American women were unwanted in the workforce due to the fact that they did not fit criteria by stating that “similarly, a woman might be hired as a secretary if she were white, but wouldn’t have a chance at that job if she were a black. Neither the black jobs nor the women’s jobs were appropriate for black women, since they were neither black or male” (Crenshaw). According to this, it was considered to be discrimination against the black women even if they were to be hired. There is no doubt that the government did not want black people to combine their race and gender with white people. “Intersectionality, then, was my attempt to make feminism, anti-racist activism, and anti-discrimination law do what I thought they should- highlight the multiple avenues through which racial and gender oppression were experienced so that the problems would be easier to discuss and understand” (Crenshaw). Through intersectionality, Crenshaw’s motive was to use this theme in order to intersect ideas of feminism and anti discrimination.
Intersectionality is a social factor that not only support based on race, but it also overlaps to support and defend other factors such as trans women within feminist movements, those with disabilities inferior to the police and all things that are related to racism, sexism, transphobia etc. Feminist theory claims that a life of a women is intersecting a system of oppression. People accuse intersectionality of not being able to expand the horizons to find solutions, but there are ways to manage that. Many organizations have been around the world trying to disappear racism and discrimination since it is still around the world, but those corporations cannot do anything about it since they do not have the power to create strong relationship with groups that are not intersectionality.
This phase of the feminist project becomes difficult and it establishes a struggle to form a comprehensive organization due to the lack of effort that society as a whole cannot attempt to resolve. Intersectionality is significant for the feminist theory because it allows feminist theorists to know the differences between women. Another significant factor of the feminist theory relies on the cooperation between scholars and intellectuals that manage to combine historical events and policymaking. Intersectionality describes how experiences depend on the historical and cultural context between each woman. According to these statements, is influential to facilitate implementation of policies on which it could address women’s needs. Theorists disagree between each other, but intersectionality allows them to maintain belief and work for a better understanding of women’s experiences whether it was for an unjust treatment or an advantage. “In the context of addressing the racial disparities that still plague our nation, activists and stakeholders must raise awareness about the racial injustice that must be addressed to enhance the lives of all youths of color” (Crenshaw). Let’s create a difference with intersectionality by helping every organization supporting intersectionality to grow and have a voice to stand up for every female and people that are being discriminated.
