Part of the South Fork Eel Wilderness, Red Mountain extends beyond the wilderness boundary and provides an important plant and wildlife connection between the South Fork Eel and Elkhorn Ridge Wilderness areas. The name comes from a zone of reddish soil that occupies the central part of the area, and contrasts sharply with the surrounding landscape. These unusual serpentine soils support several endemic plants and a unique vegetation cover of Jeffrey pines, Sargent and MacNab cypress, which only grow in a handful of places. Several other rare and endangered plant species also occupy this soil type. The management of the unprotected portions of this area will be considered in the BLM’s forthcoming plan for the region, known as the Northwest California Integrated Plan (NCIP).

Meet at 9 am at the intersection of Red Mountain Access Rd and CA Highway 271 (just east of Hwy 101 exit # 625). Bring: lunch, water, comfortable hiking gear, binoculars, cameras, layered clothing (unpredictable weather). Focus: rare plants, geology (distinct ultramafic biocommunity).

To RSVP, call Jeff with the Eel River Recovery Project at (707)244–4584 or (707)247–3030.
