Luck

WORK

--

How many of your experiences seem like they’ve happened by chance? 30 percent? 40 percent? 80? Or do you believe that you have largely paved your own path, both in your business and in your life?

After watching a few TED Talks lately the ones on luck really stood out to me (this one and this one, especially). The ideas presented, including the importance of openness to opportunity, the creative reuse of the skills or materials you already have, the creation of strong, focused intentions and the willingness to make new connections got me thinking. Is luck really just luck? Or is it a skill, a way of creating situations that welcome and allow what we desire?

LIFE

There’s something else I find interesting about luck, though: Not only can we create luck in our own lives — we can be catalysts for the creation of luck for others.

Here’s an idea: what if we all made a single choice today that would help someone else feel lucky? Maybe we can be the boss that opened new doors in advancement, the customer that extended some grace, the spouse that helped out to expand some free time? Maybe we can cultivate the conviction in ourselves that we’re responsible for not only our own luck, but the flowing out of that luck to someone else.

Let’s take a chance and remove some fears from our daily routines. Let’s choose to hold a bit more hope that the luck we desire is on its way — not only our own, but that of others as well. Good things often come to those who expect it.

INSPIRATION

“May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears.”

― Nelson Mandela

TAKE ACTION

Do you know of any tactics you could start today that would open the door to more luck? Brainstorm five and see if one starts some momentum towards creating your own luck.
