Why Does the Christian Right want Kavanaugh?

Evangelical leaders across the country are aggressively pushing for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh to be quickly confirmed, even though there have been serious allegations of attempted rape, from when he was a student at an elite prep school in his youth. Today, September 21, 2018, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told the attendees at the Values Voters Summit, an organization that was named as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, that Kavanaugh will be confirmed. This Christian Conservative group is well know for demonizing all LGBTQ people and have been aggressively fighting same-sex marriage, hate crime laws, anti-bullying campaigns and have espoused anti-Semitic and anti-Islam views as well as being supportive of White Supremacist groups. They ultimately serve the wealthy Christian whites of this country. So why is McConnell there and why is it so important for far right Christian Conservatives to have their man on the Supreme Court bench? There’s only one reason, and that reason is bigotry!

The End Justifies the Means

Donald Trump, was elected President with the help of Christian Conservatives and the Russians of course, and he and the GOP need their continued support to stay in the majority. Christian Conservative overwhelming voted for and still support Trump, regardless of his history of multiple marriages, sexual assault accusations, affairs with prostitutes, shady or illegal business practices and a complete lack of a moral compass. The reason for their support is that Trump has promised to appoint Federal Judges that will repeal abortion rights, same-sex marriage, LGBTQ rights and women’s rights and will advance the causes and values of white Christians. Regardless of the very real possibility that the rights of workers, the handicapped and the poor will take a back seat to the rights of corporations and the wealthy elite. Once they get their judges and once the country is on the road to a Conservative Christian nation they will abandon Trump in hoards and even turn on him.

We, as a nation that prides itself in the concept of Separation of Church and State, should never have gotten this far in having religious organizations and leaders influencing our courts or legislative bodies. The great Conservative Republican icon, Barry Goldwater is quoted saying ““Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they’re sure trying to do so, it’s going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can’t and won’t compromise. I know, I’ve tried to deal with them.” If Kavanaugh is confirmed there may be no way back for this country to avoid becoming a White Christian oligarchic nation where minorities of all kinds are regulated to second class citizens, or worse.
