Think of that draw with all your household bills in, take a look in that draw right now. I bet you can’t even find your car insurance certificate. Have you got your passport and drivers license in that draw too, or are they safe and sound in your sock drawer?

When you do find it look at how much personal data is on that single piece of paper. Your name, address, date of birth, sex and car registration. Not to mention all the other data the company collected on you to give you a quote, and if you used a price comparison site, think about how many of those that quoted you a price got a copy of all that lovely personal and private data.

Let’s take a look at how a company might look to profit from your data, hypothetically of course.

So having your car details, what products could a company sell you from that car insurance quote data? Well, first of all, we know the make and model. So a company could look to sell the data to not only your current car manufacturer, but competitors and that company know the date you purchased the vehicle (do a car insurance quote and you’ll be asked for the date of purchase). With those simple data points, you’ll soon be receiving lots of personalised emails and yes, good old fashioned direct mail too. With one purpose, to get you to purchase their latest model.

What else could a company do with the car insurance quote data? They know the age of your car too (vehicle registration brings back year of manufacture), how about a car warranty? Or breakdown cover, MOT, Key, Tyre cover? They also asked for vehicle value, how about a GAP (Guaranteed Asset Protection) policy?

Now under GDPR you’re asked to opt in to being contacted by third parties and the amount you’re marketed to should have dropped off, but there are still plenty of companies that would purchase this data, and then the barrage of marketing begins.

Now, this is just a small example of how companies could look to profit from your data. Think about how many companies have your data?

Do you even care?

One of those companies is hacked, your data, including bank account details, is now with people who will use it to clone your identity. Now it’s not just annoying sales emails, post and calls, your identity has been taken and it’s going to be hard to get back.

Do you care yet?
