Understanding the many types of constipation, their causes, and available therapies is critical for successful management and prevention of problems such as intestinal obstruction.

  1. Functional Constipation: This is the most frequent form, when the bowel is healthy but not working properly. It’s frequently linked to lifestyle choices like diet and exercise.
  2. Secondary constipation can be caused by medical illnesses such as diabetes, thyroid issues, or Parkinson’s disease.
  3. Iatrogenic Constipation: Caused by drugs such as opioids, antihistamines, and antidepressants.

Causes of Constipation

  • Dietary Factors: Low fiber intake and insufficient fluid drinking.
  • Physical inactivity: A sedentary lifestyle.
  • Medical Conditions: Hypothyroidism, diabetes, and neurological diseases.
  • Medications include certain pain relievers (opiates), antidepressants, and iron supplements.
  • Psychological factors include stress and anxiety.

Treatments of Constipation

Dietary Fiber:

  1. Fiber is essential for softening stools and increasing their volume, which aids in bowel movement. Sources include: Fruits and vegetables include apples, bananas, oranges, carrots, and broccoli.
  2. Whole Grains include oatmeal, brown rice, and whole wheat bread.

Stool Softeners:

Stool softeners, such as docusate sodium, help to keep the stool moist and easy to pass. They are commonly used for:

  • Post-Surgical Patients: To minimize strain during bowel motions.
  • Elderly Individuals: Who may have firm, dry stools.

Laxatives:

There are various forms of laxatives, which encourage bowel motions.

  • Bulk-forming laxatives: Psyllium absorbs water and forms a soft, bulky stool.
  • Stimulant Laxatives: These include bisacodyl and senna, both of which enhance bowel activity.
  • Osmotic Laxatives: Similar to lactulose, these laxatives attract water into the intestine to soften feces.

Lifestyle Modifications

  • Regular Exercise: Improves digestive function.
  • Adequate Hydration: Promotes stool softening.

Alternative Therapies

  • Probiotics: May aid to improve intestinal health.
  • Herbal teas: Senna and dandelion, for example, are known to have modest laxative effects.

Complications of Constipation

  1. Bowel Obstruction
    Chronic constipation can cause fecal impaction, which blocks the gut. Symptoms include:Symptoms include severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and difficulty passing gas or stools.
  2. Hemorrhoids and anal fissures
    Straining during bowel motions can cause enlarged blood vessels (hemorrhoids) and anal fissures.

When to Get a Follow-Up Evaluation

  • Blood in Stools: This could imply hemorrhoids or more serious issues.
  • Severe Pain: Indicates a probable blockage or other consequences.
    Symptoms include unexplained weight loss and altered bowel habits.
