We let YOU down: a letter to Nature.

By now, the Earth’s immune system has rightly identified us as a virus. It’s firing up its antibodies and stimulating a fever to rid itself of the disease. We are like any other organism. Much like bacteria, with access to an abundant energy source — in our case, fossil fuels — we fill up our petri dish. We engulf or expel everything else. When we run out of energy and resources to exploit, the overblown population crashes back to something manageable; or it dies off completely. It’s not evil, it’s just the way life works. “ — The SpinOff

We will either die or be tamed by mother nature. It is better to be tamed instead of dying. Also, it is naive to think that we can control or even destroy nature. It is much bigger than us. We will be the losing party each time. Climate Change is the way nature react to destroy humans.

Dear Nature,

I hope that you taught us a lesson. A lesson from climate change. A lesson from Tsunamis. A lesson from wildfires. And so on.

I know we are consuming too much and give too little back to you. Thus, whatever the punishment that you throw at us, we deserve it.

You were good for us in the past. You saw us as infants crawling out from caves. You provided us with food, water and air. You provided us with everything we needed for shelter. You gave us everything.

We were grateful for some time. Then we put some distance between us. It was no longer about living in harmony. It was only about us. It was only about our money, our technology, our brains. We simply forgot everything that you did for us.

You never said anything. You watched us with kindness. You kept providing everything we need. We exploited you. We drilled you, we took the poison that you buried from our reach. We took oil out. We started poisoning us, we started poisoning you.

The extent of our mischievous acts didn’t end there. It went on and on.

Then you had to take action. I understand that. I am not sure everyone else feels the same way. So, in the next 40 years, you may take more radical decisions. I don’t blame you. I blame myself. I blame humans.

We pushed you too far. I know you won’t stop until we are tamed. Because we are only one of your children. You have to take care of others as well for dolphins, lions and eagles.

So I hope we learn from many things.

Thank you. And I’m sorry.

Yours,

A human.
