On 8–9 May 2023, the Youth IGF was closely following an important event for the domain community — the Nordic Domain Days in Stockholm, Sweden. This annual event gathered domain industry players such as registries, registrars, service providers and investors to discuss current industry developments, as well as ways actors can work together to address different challenges.

The DNS ecosystem plays a crucial role in ensuring a secure and stable digital experience for us all. As presented at the event, initiatives like the topDNS programme aim to address one of its biggest challenges: DNS abuse. With a spotlight on the roles, responsibilities and capabilities of all the intermediaries involved, the programme empowers these stakeholders to work together more effectively and efficiently. This year’s theme “Policy & Tech” highlights the importance of leveraging both policy and technology to tackle DNS abuse. By doing so, we can create a more secure and trustworthy online environment for everyone.

Have you ever wondered what happens after you make a domain name registration? Romain Cholat’s session offered insights into the customer journey in the domain name industry that could help you retain more clients. During the presentation, Cholat highlighted key trends that have been observed by analysing new domain name registrations. This wealth of information provides a unique opportunity for businesses to gain a deeper understanding of their customers and tailor their services accordingly. The speaker shared insights on how to improve retention rates and create a more positive experience for your clients.

Email phishing and CEO fraud continue to pose significant risks to both individuals and businesses, as participants of Nordic Domain Days highlighted. Martijn Groeneweg’s talk provided actionable tips and tricks that you can use to protect yourself and your customers against these cyberattacks. By following the hands-on advice offered, you are empowered to take control of your email security and confidence in your online dealings. By implementing these measures, not only will you be safeguarding your financial and personal information, but also your reputation.

As technology continues to evolve, so too do the methods that bad actors use to exploit it. This is why Keith Drazek’s recent discussion on the importance of ongoing industry collaboration to combat DNS abuse was so important. The fact is, no one person or entity can solve this problem on their own. It takes the collective efforts of businesses, government agencies, and organisations working towards a common goal. But the good news is that together, we can make a difference — and Keith’s words serve as a powerful reminder of this. We can innovate more quickly, share best practices, and develop more effective solutions when we work together — and that’s exactly what we need to do if we hope to keep our networks secure in an ever-changing digital landscape.

James Bladel from GoDaddy and Kelly Hardy from iQGlobalAS had an insightful discussion at Nordic Domain Days about crafting TOUs. The conversation that unfolded plunged deep into the importance of creating policies that reflect the world we want to see. As Bladel and Hardy emphasised, companies need to step up their game and take community responsibility seriously. However, they also cautioned against overreach and acknowledged the delicate balance that must be struck in order to preserve individual freedom while still promoting shared values.
