Tips from JobFest Employers
Finding a job is a job.
After JobFest last September I had the chance to talk with a bunch of the employers and get some tips on what they’re keen to see from job seekers attending. These employers know what they’re talking about — they interviewed over 400 people on the day and a actually hired over 150 of them!
There are five points that I think you’ll want to know going into JobFest this year. These 5 Steps to Success cover all the basics when it comes to your JobFest job search. These points are easy as to follow and won’t take much time at all!
5 Steps to Success
If you keep these five points in mind before and during JobFest you’ll be sorted.
Purpose: Think about what you want to do.
There are over 75 employers that come to JobFest and they represent a ton of different industries and roles. Take some time before the day and think about what kind of job you want to do, where you want to do it, and when you want to do it. It takes 10 minutes to put together a list. If you’re still not sure check out the Self Awareness course on YouthFull to help get an idea of what kind of industry suits you!
Research: Know which employers are there and what they do.
Now that you’ve got a purpose in mind take a look at all the different employers that will be at JobFest. They are coming because they want to talk with somebody like you and start building a future together. If you’ve done your research rather than learning about the company you can learn about the role you’d have there. It is a win-win!
Preparation: Get yourself ready.
Today is the day you’re gonna rock it! You’ve got a purpose in mind, you know what companies are going to be there, and you know who you want to talk to. Now it is time to dust off your CV and sort out transport. You know what would really help? Having a friend practice an interview with you!
Presentation: Put your best foot forward, take it seriously, be courteous.
I’ve heard that it takes 30 seconds to make a first impression. A big part of that is how you present yourself. Don’t show up in a hoody and jeans, dress to impress and wear something that you’d wear to church. These employers have put a ton of effort into getting ready for JobFest and it would be good to show up and show off that you’re ready for one of their jobs.
Confidence: Sell yourself, engage, ask questions.
If you’ve looked at the last 4 points then this one will be easy as. It comes down to how ready are you to be employed. Sell yourself in your presentation, engage over your purpose, and ask questions that came up when you researched the company. If you do all that then you’ll be sorted in the interview and the job that’ll come next.
A couple of other things to keep in mind is that you should always be courteous. If an employer offers you work or an interview keep in touch. Let them know how excited you are, ask questions, or if you don’t think it’ll work out let them know.
JobFest is all about first time jobs. You’re gonna find a solid start here, one that you can use to build a career. You’re not gonna be a CEO in 6 weeks but you could be in 6 years if you give some of these jobs a chance. Keep your expectations real and you’ll have a much better experience.
