SUMMARY OF THE PROJECT

Why does this project take place?

In today’s Europe, hate speech is one of the most prolific forms of intolerance, radicalization, and exclusion. Hate speech is nearly always the result of racist or discriminatory attitudes, especially towards marginalized people. We see the need to address it not only when it is visible, but also at its roots: at the level of attitudes. A combination of education and cooperation with local authorities, proposed in this project — is a method that we consider an effective measure in combating hate speech.'

You saw hate speech.
You heard hate speech.
Would you be willing to change hate speech?

AIM

The aim of the project is to equip 30 youth workers with competencies to raise awareness about hate speech in local communities in Europe and to empower them to take actions against hate speech locally by analysing local realities, exchanging practices and planning cooperation with local authorities.

OBJECTIVES

  • To improve the understanding of mechanisms of hate speech and the ability to recognize it and address it;
  • To empower youth workers to become advocates and addressing hate speech, and to build capacity in using Human Rights Education approaches and methodologies to prevent and address hate speech;
  • To explore the current realities, challenges, and achievements in relation to addressing hate speech.
  • To learn about the practices and tools to address hate speech such as media literacy, counter, and alternative narratives, advocacy, and conflict transformation.
  • To create space to design at least 8 local actions organized in cooperation with the local authorities and communities addressing hate speech;
  • To promote a multi-stakeholder engagement and to establish sustainable cooperation in combating hate speech among the participants and local decision-makers in their communities.

PROFILE OF PARTICIPANTS

  • activists, peacebuilders or youth workers in the field of radicalization, exclusion, freedom of speech, and human rights;
  • willing to cooperate with their local governments and institutions in the development of actions against Hate Speech;
  • active or interested in the field of peace, human rights, and youth work;
  • ready to act as multipliers of gained competencies after the training;
  • available to take part in the whole duration of the project;
  • being residents in the partner countries;
  • able to communicate in English;
  • preferably (not necessarily) involved within organizations working with the No Hate Speech Movement.

HOW WE WORK (we try to be different)

The training course will be based on the principles of non-formal education: it will have a planned program of personal and social education for young people designed to improve a range of skills and competencies, outside the formal educational curriculum.

We will implement the basic elements of the non-formal education, such as the education being voluntary, organised with educational objectives, participatory and learner-centred, about learning life skills and preparing for active citizenship, based on involving both individual and group learning with a collective approach, holistic and process-oriented, as well as based on experience and action (we will plan the follow up activities) and starts from the needs of the participants.

COSTS, what is that?

We believe in one thing, the power of peace education and the right for all to have an opportunity. That is why, thanks to the ERASMUS+ scheme, we are able to provide this training for you for FREE. Accommodation, food, and materials used in the course are fully covered by the organizers.

Bear in mind that you will need to send the travel proposal before buying the planes to the coordination team. The European Commission (and so, the organizers) only refunds the cheapest trip for and back.

Also, you must come from the listed countries (so no need to be a national of the country…but the transport needs to be done from and to the partner countries).

Travel costs limits:
a) Portugal — 20€
b) Spain — 180€
c) Malta, Italy, The Netherlands, Belgium — 275€
d) Albania, Kosovo*, Poland, Serbia — 360 €
