EU Reports that it shuts down the Internet

This is fake news, as shutting Internet would lead to obstacles in practicing the right of information and right of freedom of expression.

So as Internet exists and hopefully will function, there are a few things that each of us can practice in order to make it safer place and decrease the rate of hate speech online.

Now that we got your attention we want to share some safety tips while using the Internet. Since, you can notice how easy is to create and disseminate a fake news we want to raise the awareness and make sure that people will think twice before believe in the story or the title they are reading. Some news or online speeches can be harmful for a mass public.

Hate speech is any kind of speech that is offensive, threatening or insulting for a person or group based on their race color, religion or other traits. The importance to of being aware about hate speech lays in the fact that there are a lot of real life examples where hate speech has caused a lot of harms.

According to the Matsuda’s (1993) ritual model of communication, any form of racist expressions is creating minorities to be identified with negative attributes tied to them, and therefore are directly harmful to them. The continuous usage of such expressions are causing subordination of minorities.

So far there have been a lot of actions done offline as well as online. What recently have been done by the major Internet player (Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Twitter) is that all have agreed to a European Union code of conduct obligating to review “majority of valid notifications for removal of illegal hate speech” posted on their services within 24 hours”. This has been adopted on May 31, 2016.

Today, we celebrate Safer Internet Day.

The so called “Safer Internet Day” was organized by the Insafe network in 2004 and it is celebrated in more than 100 countries. The Safer Internet Day 2017 will be 13th annual celebration.

The idea of taking initiative by the Insafe network to organize countries around the world to celebrate this day, lays in the fact to encourage citizens to use the Internet and all other online technologies — positively, safely and effectively.

For that purpose we are sharing few tips how to stay safe on Internet.
