I Asked AI to Review My Books
Spoiler alert: it didn’t go well!
Recently, I’ve been playing around with the AI known as ChatGPT to create writing prompts for Promptly Written. The bot was designed by OpenAI to generate text-based responses to questions and tasks in a convincingly “human” voice.
ChatGPT works by pitting a predictive text generator (like when your phone suggests what word it thinks you’ll type next) and a discriminator (which assesses the logic of the string of words as they are predicted) against each other to create realistic-looking outputs. The back-and-forth process creates text that is theoretically indistinguishable from real responses but is often incorrect due to insufficient context on the discriminator’s end.
Can AI Review Books?
My first two novels, Out of Order (2015) and Order in the Court (2016), were originally published with Dreamspinner Press. I decided to pull the books from Dreamspinner in 2021 due to a controversy involving financial mismanagement and am currently in the process of republishing them with JMS Books.
