Hi Readers! 👋

I’m Hatsumi, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Engineer from GovTech, specifically within the Video Analytics team. Since graduating from SUTD in 2022 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Computer Science and Design), and stepping into GovTech’s Technology Associate Programme (TAP), I’ve taken on a role that stretches beyond coding but also understanding and impacting our community through technology. My daily work is a blend of challenges and learning opportunities, making every day dynamic and fulfilling!

My Role in the Video Analytics Team

Video Analytics Team Bonding Day

In the heart of the Video Analytics team, my responsibilities extend across the design, implementation, and deployment phases of new features for the Video Analytics System, a central platform that empowers and lower the barrier for Government agencies to adopt video analytics solutions. This role requires me to immerse myself deeply into both frontend and backend development, ensuring a seamless and functional experience for our users. One of my key contributions includes deploying a Secure File Transfer Protocol feature for bulk uploads of images and videos, streamlining the process of uploading, which significantly boosts user convenience and efficiency. More recently, I’ve worked on integrating a deepfake detection system, enabling users to verify the authenticity of their media content, a crucial step towards maintaining digital integrity and trust.

Beyond my work in the Video Analytics System, I’m part of a project aimed at enhancing the understanding of unique items through the automation of image captioning process of a government agency. Unlike any other captioning tasks, this initiative delves into the nuanced recognition of distinctive objects — each possessing unique characteristics in terms of colour, shape, and type. The real challenge lies in the precision required to recognise these uncommon objects; it’s also about understanding their context within the images, how they relate to other images, and conveying their essence through detailed and accurate descriptions. This project is poised to significantly enhance operational efficiency and establish a new benchmark for the consistency of the captioning processes and tagging across images.

A Culture of Learning and Innovation

What sets TAP apart for me is its vibrant culture of learning and innovation, illustrated by initiatives like the Engineering Bootcamp. Organised by the senior batch, the bootcamp offers a deep dive into GovTech’s various divisions, enriching our understanding of the organisation’s vast technological ecosystem. It’s an immersive experience that not only acquaints us with the breadth of GovTech’s work but also offers us a hands-on opportunity to understand the works of the various divisions.

One of the standout revelations for me was on the topic of UI/UX design. From the placement of every button to the selection of colours — is deeply rooted in comprehensive research and thoughtful consideration. It was an eye-opener to learn that what appears straightforward on the surface is the result of extensive research, aiming not just for aesthetic appeal but a sophisticated blend of psychology, technology, and artistry, all aimed at enhancing the user’s experience.

Bonding Day during Engineering Bootcamp

Central to the TAP experience is GTCollab, a mini-ideathon that fosters collaboration among TAP associates from different batches. In this event, we’re grouped with fellow TAPpers from different divisions and tasked with devising solutions to real-world challenges. This platform creates an environment that promotes teamwork, allowing us to blend different ideas and perspectives to come up with innovative solutions.

Becoming part of the TAP community means joining a network of aspiring tech leaders, each with their unique stories and ambitions. Initiatives like the Engineering Bootcamp and GTCollab not only facilitate meaningful connections among peers but also cultivate a support system that thrives on inspiration and mutual growth.

Fostering Leadership, Mentorship and Building a Community of future leaders

A highlight of my experience in TAP was undoubtedly the mentorship journey. The chance to connect with mentors from various divisions across GovTech was not just beneficial — it was transformative. This process involved engaging conversations with a diverse group of potential mentors, and we eventually chose our mentor based on our communication synergy and professional interests. My mentor became more than just an adviser; he became a catalyst for my growth. He challenged me to broaden my perspective, to see beyond the code, and understand the impact of our work on society. Although my role primarily involves supporting various government agencies rather than directly assisting citizens, he inspired me to see the larger picture. He pointed out that by enhancing the efficiency and capabilities of these agencies, we are, in fact, indirectly contributing to the betterment of the lives of the people in Singapore. This perspective shift was enlightening; it expanded my understanding of our efforts in streamlining operations and improving services within government bodies ripple outwards, touching the lives of individuals and community at large.

Complementing the mentorship, we also had exclusive engagement sessions with senior leaders, offering us a window into GovTech’s strategic direction. These sessions were invaluable, providing deeper organisational insights and enhancing our understanding of how strategic decisions are made within the agency and its wider relationship with the government ecosystem.

Final Thoughts

I’m halfway through my TAP journey, and it’s evident that the experiences, mentorship, and community have greatly influenced my professional and personal development. This programme is more than a stepping stone in my tech career; it serves as a portal to a community of future tech leaders that strives to make a real difference with our expertise through technology.

For anyone thinking about their next move in tech, TAP stands out as a unique opportunity. It invites you on an enriching journey where your technical skills are not just enhanced but applied in meaningful ways. At GovTech, our work goes beyond development, we’re part of innovation and influence, crafting a future where technology benefits the lives of people in Singapore.

My time in TAP has been incredibly rewarding, setting me on the path to becoming a future leader in technology. If you’re eager to be at the heart of change and contribute to enhancing the lives of people in Singapore, I would recommend you explore what TAP has to offer at go.gov.sg/TAP.
