Migrating’ into GovTech

In the summer of 2022, I had the privilege of interning with GovTech’s Government Infrastructure Group (GIG), under the Managed Hosting Infrastructure (MHI) division as a Migration Specialist Intern.

During this internship, I mainly worked to consolidate the migration workflows of different types of hosting environments and product services while sourcing for tools to facilitate the automated tracking of these migrations.

While my internship role may be a transient one, I hope the sharing of my journey of working at GovTech over these 12 weeks will be useful to students considering an internship with GovTech 😊

Embarking on my internship

On my first day of work at the office, I found that the administrative procedures for interns and new hires were comprehensive and meticulously detailed, allowing me to smoothly collect and set up the necessary equipment for work. After my onboarding, I was introduced to my team in MHI and mentor.

I was given a comprehensive office tour and made my introductions. I began to see how GovTech’s values of Agile, Bold and Collaborative shaped the various aspects of our workplace culture — we start project sprints with daily stand-ups in the morning to update one another on our respective progress; frequently video call or text one another when working from home to ideate or make clarifications; making an effort together at least two days a week and work together more effectively in the same office workspace.

In addition, the frequent and varied forms of employee welfare at GovTech were more than sufficient to amaze me throughout my relatively short internship stint — there were vending machines and pantries stocked with snacks and drinks when breaks are needed, team dinners to relax and laugh the stress of the week away, and even durian parties for everyone to chat while getting their fill of durians in true Singaporean fashion.

Grateful for a fulfilling and wholesome internship

Looking back, while I have indeed gained new knowledge on how GovTech hosts and provides infrastructure support for the various agencies relying on it for their respective services. I found that I had gained just as much, if not more in soft skills, from learning about how to detail tickets and epics in Jira, to learning how to effectively and succinctly deliver a successful presentation to senior management in product meetings, and even to learning how to conduct myself when contacting external parties for clarifications and quotes

My internship at GovTech was a short, but a fulfilling and enriching one, and I believe that the positive experience was made possible largely due to the conducive and productive work environment created by my warm and encouraging co-workers.

However, seeing is believing after all. I hope that this blogpost will serve as sufficient encouragement for you to apply to GovTech in any capacity in the future.
