Audio filters — circuits that cut (or boost) particular frequency ranges of an audio signal — are among the most fundamental and versatile tools in electronic music.

They form the basis of subtractive synthesis, pioneered by Bob Moog, in which a rich audio signal (like a sawtooth wave) is slowly sculpted to a desired sound by removing frequencies. They are also extensively used in music production and performance for sound design and creating movement in a track, and as a creative performance tool.

The most common type of filter is the low-pass filter, which — as the name suggests — allows lower frequencies to pass unchanged, while attenuating all frequencies higher than a certain cutoff frequency.

Recently, soundscape modulation was added to the Yudemon HRV app, with loudness as the first modulation parameter.

Today, we are adding a second modulation option: a low-pass filter.

As you practice your resonance breathing, the cutoff frequency of the filter will change along with your breathing cycle, performing a filter sweep that gives the soundscape itself a breath-like character (or you can also think of it like the soundscape slowly diving underwater and coming up to the surface again in sync with your breath).

You can choose how “strong” you want the modulation to be, which effectively changes the lowest cutoff frequency, as well as whether you want the effect to be strongest at the end of the inhale, or the end of the exhale.

Along with changing the cutoff frequency, the modulation also changes the filter’s resonance across the breathing cycle (which boosts frequencies around the cutoff), giving it a characteristic filter sweep.

We hope that this will make every single resonance breathing session with the Yudmon HRV app even more unique, as well as assist you in getting even more out of your biofeedback practice.

You can download the updated app now from the App Store.
