Being an exemplary chef requires passion and commitment. The working hours for a chef can be long, but incredibly enjoyable. Chef Deborah Swai, pastry chef and the proprietor of About Thyme Restaurant in Nairobi, shares her enthusiasm cooking and baking.

After a few years working and studying in England, Swai came back home, to Nairobi, to start up an eatery that Kenyan foodies would really enjoy, About Thyme.

From duck cigars to pumpkin and amaretti tortellini, it’s easy to see why About Thyme appeals to foodies — these dishes cannot be found anywhere else in Nairobi. Where does Swai’s inspiration come from? “Everything around me,” she states, but she especially credits her mother for her love of cooking and creative thinking. “She taught me so much during my childhood,” says Swai.

When she’s not in her own kitchen, what does she prefer to eat? “Nothing beats coastal Swahili cuisine: fresh fish and seafood with coconut milk and mshikaki…hot off the charcoal grill,” she says.

About Thyme restaurant is located off Peponi Road in Westlands. If you can’t make it to the restaurant, delivery is available to most areas in Nairobi.
