This 2016 election was one of the most interesting in all of United States history. The results left many satisfied, while others became distressed and outraged in regards to the new President-Elect. While I have my own opinions on this election and what it means, I’m sure that you have been bombarded with opinions for months and I don’t want to burden you with my own. In fact, this entire article is going to be speaking to those who were unsatisfied with the outcome of the election as well as those who are unhappy with President-Elect Donald Trump’s decisions so far. Throughout the youth of America, one solution that has helped many cope with upsetting situations: the role-playing game, Undertale. Since coming out in late 2015, this game has become a cult classic and mainstream favorite among casual and hardcore gamers all around the world. It has garnered a large number of awards as well as an aggregate score of 92 on Metacritic and a collective review score of about 9.7/10 stars based off of websites like IGN, Steam, GameSpot, and Destructoid. While many adults cringe at or laugh off the idea of a video game doing anything but destroying brain cells, there is a reason why this game became such a phenomenon. While many other games focus on the shooting, killing, and mind numbing violence, Undertale is a game based around mercy, decision making, and second chances. As you walk through the subtle realms that are reminiscent of the old school games from your childhood, you encounter monsters that all have individual personalities and attack patterns. The game is also accompanied by a masterful soundtrack crafted by the head game creator, Toby Fox, and it really helps you get into the otherworldly experience. What is interesting about this game is that you have the option to talk to your adversaries and spare your opponents which helps you understand their stories and appreciate the depth of the game. This can be related to the current events of today as there is a need for both sides of the public regarding this presidential race to peacefully unite under the ideals of this country and to do what is best for the most amount of people. There are talks of state secession and there have been publicized violent riots and flag burnings in the streets, but that is not what America needs. As a society, many are acting out of fear and anger, and when those emotions are ruling our state of mind, it is impossible to make correct and rational decisions. However, if we start to mirror what is implied in Undertale: forgiveness, mercy, and unity, perhaps we can grow as a people and support each other throughout this challenging time. So, if you are someone that is distraught over the outcome of the election, I strongly urge you to join this united group of people and check out Undertale. In a time when we all need to come together as one, it is important to seek out the things that support this model.
