An Event of Opportunities

On Monday, May 9, students and parents are invited to the Yucca Valley High School gymnasium for a presentation on Career Technical Education. The event will begin at 6pm, and is designed to provide information on the many career pathways programs offered by YVHS, both on- and off-campus.

Odyssey staff writers Jaylen Dubose and Andrew Parker interviewed 10th grade counselor Ms. Southern to find out all the details.

Q: With the CTE night coming up, what are some options that are available for students to take at each grade level?
A: Ms. Southern: “On our campus at Yucca Valley High School, we have Criminal Justice and Criminal Justice II. You have to take the first class first, and you can take that sophomore year. In some cases, we allow students to take it freshman year, but generally offer the course to sophomores, juniors, and seniors. We have Culinary Arts as well. We try to keep it available more for upperclassmen. If there are seats available, we might open it up to sophomores and freshmen, but generally it’s offered to juniors and seniors.

Q: How long do these programs last?
A: “It depends. Culinary Arts and Management is a double-period class that takes one school year. Criminal Justice is two years. We also have CTE classes that are not on our campus that we can put you on a bus for. Some classes, like Private Security Guard, is after school two days a week. 911 Communication Dispatcher is after school two days a week. Some of them are going to require you to attend classes during the school day, such as Cybersecurity and Unmanned Aircraft Systems over at ACCE.”

Q: Are students committed after taking something for the first year?
A: “In some cases, yes. Sometimes the classes are a series, and you have to complete the series in order to get the certificate — Criminal Justice, for example.”
