Transitioning from the dog-days of summer to fall comes with a unique set of challenges for all homeowners.
We’ve put together an end-of-summer to-do list to get your home ready for the changing season (pumpkin everything is ALMOST here!)
Clean your gutters and downspouts. Gutter debris can create tremendous problems if not cleaned regularly. With an active storm season having your gutters cleaned is a must. It will save you from pricey repairs down the road. Now is also a great time to consider having seamless gutters installed. Better yet, you might want to consider putting gutter guards onto new or existing gutters to help debris from clogging them.
Clean your windows and repair gaps. Having your windows professionally cleaned is a great way to make sure they are holding up well. Make sure there are no gaps where air can escape. If you find any gaps, be sure to caulk them right away. If that’s not enough to keep air inside, it might be time to consider new windows.
Protect your deck. An active storm season means more debris buildup on your deck. Have your deck power-washed before the end of summer and then have a sealant stain applied. Have a Zaarly pro come and inspect your deck for any loos joints and fittings and to make sure the overall health of your deck is ready for colder temps later this year.
Check siding. Siding issues like bucking or blistering can lead to big problems later. Things like holes can mean an insect infestation, fading can mean that it’s time for new siding and mold or mildew can indicate water damage has or is occurring. Now is the time to make siding repairs or to replace siding — be sure to do it in the warmer months.
Add or replace weather-stripping on exterior doors. Weather seals around doors breakdown over time. These gaps will allow air to escape which will lead to higher utility bills.
Hose off and clean out your outdoor garbage bins. That left over pizza that somehow managed to miss the garbage bag and find its way to the bottom of your trash can is going to start attracting critters of all kinds. Be sure to clean your outdoor garbage bins and containers — use a mild cleaner to really do the job right.
