Garage Organization
Did you know that it is possible to fit cars AND tools in a garage? It’s true!
Some Tips on Organizing The Garage:
Pick a Section and Go!
Start with one part of your garage. People find that starting in the front and working their way back is helpful. You’ve got to start somewhere, it’s better to narrow down the area quickly.
Keep, Donate, Toss.
You’ll need to do a quick inventory of what you have and what you need. Safety first — be sure when you are throwing away any cleaning supplies, batteries, car maintenance supplies, that you check how to dispose of them properly.
Lay Down Three Tarps — these are your toss, donate and keep piles.
Things to toss; Things that are broken that you (or your spouse) have promised to fix for more than six months, expired household chemicals (which may need a different kind of disposal and anything you haven’t used in two years or more. If you want to keep certain sentimental items — it’s time to bring them inside or take a picture to keep the memory.
Pro Tip: Paint should NOT be stored in the garage. Extreme heat and cold will ruin the paint. Paint should be kept in a temperate area. If you have cans of paint in the garage, it’s probably time to dispose of them.
After the garage is cleaned out and organized — it’s time to have garage organization units installed. When it comes to garages — think vertical organizing and ceiling units. This keeps your stuff out of the way and accessible.
Lastly, consider having the garage floor replaced with epoxy floors. New floors will not only give your garage a new look, but epoxy floors are also easy to clean and protect your garage!
Sheds
If your handy-person loves projects and has lots of tools — it might be time to consider a shed.
Before you start in on any shed project, you will want to understand zoning ordinances, deed restrictions, and building codes. Some areas require building permits for sheds. You’ll also want to know how far from property lines your shed can be and what materials are acceptable for siding. If you live in a neighborhood with an HOA, be sure to check the rules first.
