March Home Maintenance List — Spring is Coming!
Believe it or not, the first day of spring is just around the corner. The winter to spring transition might feel like it takes an eternity, before you know it you’ll be planting spring flowers and giving the outside of your home a new fresh coat of paint!
Your home goes through a lot of transition during this month. It’s important to keep up with all of the little maintenance tasks, so they don’t become BIG headaches later.
☐ Change your furnace filter
☐ Have your carpets cleaned
☐ Check for early signs of wood-rot
☐ Make sure the ground around your foundation is sloped correctly
☐ Have your chimney flue cleaned and inspected by a pro
☐ Clean-up your fireplace when it gets warmer and close the damper
How to close different types of dampers:
- Lever dampers: Lift slightly on the lever to disengage it, then push or pull it closed.
- Chain dampers: Pull on first the longer chain to disengage the mechanism, then the shorter chain to close the flap
- Metal loop dampers: These can be closed by hand, or by inserting a poker into the loop and moving the flap closed
☐ Clean and seal tile grout
☐ Have the outside of your home pressure-washed
☐ Have roof inspected and shingles repaired/replaced if needed
☐ Clean out gutters and downspouts
☐ After the ground thaws — fill in low areas of the yard with compact soil
☐ Inspect concrete for cracks — have them filled in before heavy rains
☐ Check outside faucets for freeze damage before you turn them back on
☐ Start your spring cleaning!
