If you’ve ever been in an college residence hall, you know the smell of burnt popcorn all to well. Microwaves get a lot of use (even outside of college). With all that use comes spills, splatters and yes, burnt popcorn smell that just won’t go away. We asked a few of our service providers for some tips and tricks to keeping your microwave sparkling clean and smelling fresh!

The Baking Soda Fix:

Mix four tablespoons of baking soda to one quart of warm water and use it to wash down the inside of the microwave oven.
To deal with baked on food, mix a few tablespoons of baking soda with water in a microwave safe cup. Boil in the microwave for a few minutes. The insides of the microwave will become damp and easy to clean with a paper towel or dishcloth. This solution will also remove odors that might be lingering in your microwave.

The Fruit Fix:

Put one cup of water and a chopped-up lemon, lime or orange inside a microwave-safe bowl that can hold about four cups.
Place bowl in the microwave and turn it on high for a few minutes or until you see that the solution is boiling and the window looks steamy.
Let water and fruit cool for fifteen minutes. Then remove the bowl and wipe the microwave inside.

The Dish-soap Fix:

Fill a microwave safe bowl with warm water. Add a few squirts of dishwashing soap.
Put the bowl in the microwave for one minute, or until it begins to steam. Remove the bowl. Dampen a sponge and wipe the inside of the microwave.
The steam will loosen all of the dried on debris so that you can easily clean your microwave. You can also add baking soda to the bowl to serve as a deodorizer.

Is your microwave beyond DIY fixes? One of our housecleaners can expertly clean and deodorize it for you!
