A group of us from MIT conducted a study on Harris County property valuations, gathering data on property tax records, including data on assessments and tax bills. Our results were interesting: out of >1M properties, we found that more than 400,000 of them are overpaying taxes based on a comparable property analysis. The owners can check the results of our analysis for their property here for free: https://zappeal.io

Harris County property assessments were up by 10% in 2019. The map below shows % increases by neighborhood.

Some owners have already taken action. By May 5th, 230,000 property owners have already protested their property valuations. 28,000 homeowners have already attended their hearings, and 96% of them received a reduction of ~$25,000 on average in their property assessments. The heat map below shows average reduction by neighborhood so far in 2019.

There are many other homeowners who can benefit from the opportunity to protest. If the owners of the >400,000 over-assessed properties in Harris County protest by May 15, we believe they have a high chance of reducing their property assessments and save on property taxes.

For homeowners whose property assessments are off, higher valuation means extra tax burden they would have to pay for years. Our free assessment tool can empower homeowners to take control of their property valuations and taxes: https://zappeal.io
