Be prepared, and make sure you have all the information you need ready to present including: your assessment and/or sales comparable reports, a plan for everything you would like to make sure the assessor sees within the limited timespan.

  1. Make sure you have selected a few properties that would be most comparable to your home.
  2. If your home is surrounded by rundown properties in the neighborhood, you may highlight that in conversation. You may also take external property photos of your property and those closest to your home to share as that could affect your home’s value.
  3. If you have remodeled the inside of your property in the last few years, make sure to have the remodeling permits from your local government prior to the home visit.
  4. If you have recently refinanced your mortgage or had a formal appraisal conducted on your property that seems to favor your case, you may share a copy of that with the assessor during the visit.
  5. Make sure you are not in risking a tax increase! If your data shows that your property should be at a higher value than what the current assessment suggests, the assessor can raise the value of your property.
