Cake’ is a word that is yummy for the tummy, but not for the face. There is nothing more frightening than a cakey foundation for celebrities on the red carpet. It is going to be very disappointing to splurge on the most expensive high end foundation yet finding out they cake on your skin. Before blaming it all onto your products, try these tips and tricks instead that could probably save you from a makeup disaster!

  1. Moisturize

Always prep your skin with moisturizer before applying any makeup, even if you don’t have dry skin. A basic hydrating moisturizer or primer will prepare your skin nicely by creating a smooth canvas for any liquid or powder foundation to be applied on top seamlessly. You will know that your skin is not moisturized enough when your foundation starts clinging onto dry patches of your skin which will of course, result in cakey makeup.

2. Less Is More

Instead of using a full pump of foundation to cover up the blemishes on your face, try concealing first. Use your favourite concealer to cover up any dark spots or blemishes and when you’re done with that, apply foundation only to the areas needed to even out your skin tone. Obviously the more layer of foundation you put onto your skin, the heavier it will look so by doing this, you will be using less product. If you don’t have anything to conceal, use a small amount of foundation first and build it up after if needed to.

3. Makeup Sponge over Makeup Brush

If you have been using your brush to apply your foundation and you are not happy with the outcome, try a damp makeup sponge instead. Certain foundation brush have a denser surface so it will just move the product around, whereas a makeup sponge can absorb any excess product that may have cause your foundation to look heavy and cakey during the blending process.

4. Use Setting Spray

People often use loose powder to set their makeup in place, which is great if you have oily skin. This is because the powder can help give that matte foundation touch so you don’t have that oily look throughout the day. But if you have dry skin, adding more powder on top of your foundation can sometimes make your makeup look cakey. So try using a setting spray instead for that healthy dewy glow finish!
