Big Rocks, Pebbles & Sand….! What is important to us
Introduction
Hello, I’m Mahesh and have been working as Golang Engineer in Zeals Co. Ltd starting from couple of month ago. I’m a technologist & polyglot.
Today I would like to share an important lesson with all of you who are running busy and try best to make timeline more productive.
Let’s do that by saying “Lets start” with a “North Star.”
North Star
North Star defines a sense of purpose in our lives.
The purpose of your north star is to help you make informed decisions today. Be content with your progress, knowing that you’re one step closer to your mission.
Think of your life as a jar. This jar represents the seven days you are given in a week. You can’t make it any bigger in the same sense that you cannot increase the days in the week.
You have Big rocks, Pebbles and Sand which must all fit in the jar. These are all the things you have to accomplish over the period of time. The challenge you’re now faced with is how to get all the materials to fit into this confined space
Big Rocks. What are the most important tasks and responsibilities to attend / Tasks that important to respond back but taking longer period
Pebbles. Things are matters, but we can lived without them. Tasks that are born with grace-period
Sand. Tasks not that important. Nice to have
There is no hard and fast rule on the measurement. Common measurement would be base on importance & time complexity
It’s within human nature to get carried away Pebbles and Sand because they seem require less effort and energy. But starting your day or week with less important tasks consumes most of your time and energy, leaving little or none to complete the most important tasks, which are your big rocks. It’s complicated to get everything to fit.
When we fill our time with the little things that are not important, we leave little time to take care of the things that actually matter.
Put it differently, you need to schedule the big, important things first, then fill in the remaining time gaps with less important and less urgent to-dos.
People often get confuse with end objective of this concept. One of the misconception is : The point is, no matter how full your schedule is, if you try really hard, you can always fit some more things into it!
But the truth is “If you don’t put the big rocks in first, you’ll never get them in at all.”
Leave space for your Pebbles and sand; you don’t want to be overwhelmed. They keep things balanced and help to maintain your sanity.
If you find your situation more complicated, you can also alter this concept base upon urgency and importance in a newly derived manner, as written below
Conclusion
Organise your tasks, meetings ….etc more productively revisiting what is important to you…..!
