Welcome to our handy step by step guide on how to get started as a food delivery rider. Here you will find everything you need to know about starting food delivery work, so you can get out on the road as quickly as possible and start delivering.

Step 1 — Get a vehicle

If you don’t already have a vehicle you can use for food delivery work, you’re going to need to get one. You can use a car, scooter or sometimes a van for food delivery work with lots of different companies.

Step 2: Insurance

In order to use your vehicle legally, you’ll need to have Social, Domestic & Pleasure (SD&P) insurance in place at all times. SD&P insurance covers you for driving in your free time and it’s a legal requirement.

To use your motor vehicle for food delivery work, you’ll also need to have Hire & Reward (H&R) insurance in place. This will protect you during your shifts.

Scooter riders can purchase both SD&P and H&R cover with Zego, and we offer H&R cover for car delivery drivers.

If you only want to work part-time or you’re just looking to try out food delivery work, Zego’s pay-as-you-go H&R cover could be the right choice for you. You only pay for cover during the time you work, so it’s designed to cover drivers or riders who work up to and around 25 hours per week. Prices start from £0.55 per hour for scooter riders and £0.80 per hour for car drivers.

If you’re looking to work more than 25 hours per week, you may wish to consider purchasing a 30-day or annual policy. These policies are designed for those working longer hours and mean you can work as much as you like over a period of 30 days or one full year.

Step 3: Onboarding

There are lots of different companies you can work with as a food delivery rider. Before you start work with a food delivery platform, you’ll need to complete their quick onboarding process. If you have your insurance sorted before you meet with a company, you’ll make an excellent first impression and get out on the road much quicker.

Zego works with lots of different platforms who offer food delivery or courier work. You can find a full list of the companies that we cover by downloading the Zego app and beginning your registration.

Step 4: You’re all set

Once you’ve onboarded with a delivery platform and linked your Zego app with your work provider, you’re all good to go! But the benefits of Zego don’t stop here. All your documents will be stored safely in the Zego app, ready for you to access at any time in just a few clicks.

If you change your working hours, you can also make use of the full flexibility of our insurance to switch between policies. For example, if you use our pay-as-you-go cover but begin to work more, you can switch to a 30-day or annual policy that’s better suited to your schedule. We won’t charge you any admin fees either!
