7 Ways to Use Lavender Essential Oil

Before we discuss lavender oil recipes for hair care, skincare, health, and home, let’s understand some easy and common ways to use lavender oil for its benefits.

Diffuser

Using lavender essential oil in a diffuser is one of the best ways to not only receive its therapeutic benefits and but also freshen the room. For best effects, follow the prescribed direction of use for diffusers. Remember to keep the diffuser away from kids and pets, as high doses can be harmful to them.

Inhalation

Add a few drops of lavender oil onto a tissue or a cotton ball and then allow it to evaporate in the air. In case you prefer a milder intensity dose, keep the tissue or ball closer to you. You may sniff the cotton ball or tissue if you want an intense dose. Use it while meditating or working at your desk.

Spray

Add a few drops of lavender essential oil to a water-based solution (around 10 drops in 100 ml) to spray around the house. The blend will help to deodorize and freshen the air. Don’t forget to shake the solution well before each spray.

Steam

Add a few drops of lavender essential oil to a bowl of hot and steaming water. Cover head and the bowl of water with a towel, and then breathe in the steam deeply. When using this method, it is important to keep the eyes closed. However, this method should not be used in the case of children younger than 7 years old. Those older than the age of 7 can wear swimming goggles to protect their eyes from the steam.

Bath

Add a few drops of lavender essential oil to a few tablespoons of full cream milk or any other dispersant. Add this blend to the bath water. This method is used for inhalation of the oil as well as absorption through the skin.

Alternatively, to disperse the essential oils in a better way, use bath salts or make a relaxing bath base. Add 1 part baking soda, 3 parts sea salt and 2 parts Epsom salts to make the bath base. Add this blend to bath water after pouring 6 drops of lavender oil into 2 tablespoons of the bath base. This procedure helps in relieving stress and aching muscles.

Topically

Lavender is one of the very few essential oils that can be applied directly over small patches of the skin. However, it is best to dilute the oil with carrier oils like jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, avocado oil, or grapeseed oil before applying topically. The concentration of the blended oils is kept at a maximum of 3–5%. For more details on dilution, please refer our safety and dilution guide.

Add drops of lavender oil to a teaspoon of carrier oil and then gently rub onto the skin. Massaging this way is helpful for minor cuts and burns and to relieve joint or muscle pain or for conditions like acne. Massage blends should not exceed a concentration of 1% for adults.

Compress

Use lavender oil as a compress by adding a few drops of it in carrier oil and adding this solution to a dressing, which can then be placed on sprains, stiff joints, or muscle injuries. Alternatively, soak a cloth or a towel in a bowl of water containing a few drops of lavender essential oil and apply it directly over the affected part of the body.
