Let me start with a clear message on what differentiates us as a workplace from others:

  1. We are here to make a difference — We are in the energy analytics space since the focus is on sustainable future for the coming generations built on top of energy efficiency. Whether you are in sales, analytics or technology — if you want to make a big societal impact with what you do, Zenatix is the place to be.
  2. Work on the cutting edge of technology — Built from years of research both done by members of core team and other top researchers (who open sourced their technologies) from around the world, we understand the value of being at the helm of cutting edge technology. We promote research culture — we have published 2 short papers in top peer reviewed conferences (one of which got the best demo award as well) and a couple more are in pipeline. For those in the tech team, this implies that before using any technology, you will work on careful evaluation of why thats the best, how it fits into the architecture and how it addresses the real world use cases that our application (energy analytics) demands.
  3. We are a startup in an enterprise segment — This inherently implies we won’t grow at insane 400% quarter on quarter built on top of bleeding business model. What we aim for is good growth with good margins over a sustained period of time. This inherently implies a lot more stability compare to even the most established consumer businesses.
  4. We are in the growth phase and working on building a core team — We believe that with the right architecture in place, much of the technology pieces can be automated. Therefore, the focus is on building a core team of smart people who are decision makers when it comes to choosing the right architecture, adapting to the latest technologies as they evolve, and who constitute a small team that can continuously evolve a scalable product. If you want to be part of this core team then Zenatix should be your destination.
The Team!

Let me now come to the genesis of Zenatix when we started it. We wanted to:

  1. Solve a problem that makes a difference to the society and to the future generations
  2. Solve the problem at scale such that the impact is globally significant

Building on the genesis and differentiators, when we evaluate a potential hire, we look for the following:

  1. You should be extremely good in what you do. Passion is what drives you at work — be it sales, analysis or technology
  2. You want to create an impact on the society with your work
  3. You want to be part of the initial journey as we build Zenatix into a global player in energy efficiency space.
  4. You love taking ownership of big things given to you and grow them as your own babies as the company grows.

I think its equally important to emphasise that you are NOT a good fit if any of the following drives you to apply for Zenatix (a few reasons we often hear from people we interview):

  1. Change of location — If your primary reason for change is to move closer to your home town
  2. Salary — We surely can’t splurge as some of the other cash rich startups in the consumer business can. If we give you an offer (independent of the salary you are hired at), you can be sure that we feel you are important for the journey of Zenatix. We understand how much you are worth and if for some reason, the offered salary is on slightly lower side (than what we also understand you would otherwise get elsewhere) then we would compensate it with alternate means like stock options. The objective is not to shortchange anyone. The objective is to increase the runway of limited capital that we have and in the process on board people who contribute in their own way in the success of the company and therefore gets rewarded proportionately, when the right time comes.

One of the primary reasons for writing this post was the frustration of taking long time to find the right fit for a few positions we have been closing over the past few months. We have tried multiple channels — AngelList, recruitment agencies, Naukri, LinkedIn but can’t separate out one channel that has worked all the time.

Do we lack the talented people with the right mindset?

Can we do something different to reach out to the right people? — Ideas Welcome!
