Guilty pleasures.

Dirty little secrets — we are shamed to silence.

Until you reach a certain age.

For me, shame faded to the background in my late 50s, barely retrievable under the locks of grey and layers of crinkly folded skin.

My ritual begins each night when the darkened skies curtain off the sunny daylight and my grandson begins to dream of puppy dogs and playgrounds. The window of opportunity opens to welcome my self-indulgent side.

I quietly button up our home, turn out the lights, and peel back my covers. Relaxation does not set in — instead, my heartbeat quickens in anticipation of reuniting with my guilty pleasure.

Give me knowledge or give me death.

Whether on my laptop or phone, I take care of end-of-the-day business by clearing out and answering emails. In little time, I reap the reward of completing the necessities — and return to my home screen to press my new favorite icon.

TikTok.
