Who are the Leads?

The visitors to your website who have shown interest in your product or service are known as leads.

We collect the details of the prospects like their e-mail address or their contact numbers by means of which we can contact them to bring them further down the marketing funnel. And the best part is: the details are shared by the people themselves!

Ever signed up for an e-mail list? Or have you provided your details in exchange for an e-book? Yes, that’s how leads are generated. They give you value in exchange for your information. Then they notify you whenever something new comes up. This way, they remain in contact and keep providing value consistently and convert leads into customers through effective marketing strategies.

Visitors, Leads, and Customers

This is very simple: Visitors convert into Leads and Leads convert into Customers. Leads are a smaller group as compared to Visitors because not all visitors convert into leads. Not everyone is searching for what you are offering. Similarly, not all Leads convert into customers because although they are looking out for the things you offer, they might not get pitched up and their search might not end up in a purchase (to become a customer).

Let’s say you have a sports shop and you sell all the sports items. We will consider three customers — A, B and C. A wants sports shoes, B wants a football and C wants a badminton racket. A finds your shop and visits it, but you don’t have what A needs. Thus, A is a “visitor”.
You have football. But B has a low budget to buy any football in your shop. Before leaving, though, B provides his contact details because he liked your shop and wants to hear more about new products when they arrive in the shop. When his budget will increase, he will come to buy a new football. Thus, B is a “lead”.
You have a badminton racket. C comes to your shop and finds the brand of the racket he wants. So he makes a purchase. Now, C is a “customer”.

Why do I need leads for my business?

Consumers these days want to find things and businesses through their own research after analyzing all the requirements. Lead generation is required because it helps us to gain trust and build a relationship with potential customers. With the right content at the right time, one can easily convert a lead into a customer. But it is a gradual process. Becoming a lead doesn’t always mean that your customer is ready to make a purchase. With time, as you speak to them and get to know them, you can offer them what they need at the exact time they need it. This will increase the chances of conversions.

How to generate leads?

Generating Leads simply means to interact with your potential customers in such a way that they remember you when they need what you offer.
There are a number of ways in which you can generate leads. E-mail Marketing, Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Social Media Marketing (SMM), Networking etc. are only a few digital marketing tools to get you started.
Word of mouth always helps. Referrals through the friends and family members, online advertisements etc. also generate a lot of leads.

The steps followed in Lead Generation are: Firstly, we capture leads i.e. we identify which online users could be our potential customers and target them. Then we use lead magnets like appealing offers and deals to attract them and get their information. When someone clicks on an ad or a link, they are directed to a webpage. This is called a landing page. We need to optimize our landing page and make it user-friendly to convert visitors into leads. Lastly, we need to study the behaviour of the leads to provide them with what they want.

Your job doesn’t end when you get a new lead. In fact, the actual process begins from that point. You need to nurture your leads as well as your customers with content to make them stick with you.
