How to create a perfect content marketing strategy?

Recently someone requested me to answer a question on Quora, and the question was, “What is your perfect Content Marketing strategy?” Here are some of the things that are important (from my point of view) for a perfect Content Marketing Strategy -

1. Defining a goal: You need a target before you achieve it. This step helps you in setting one. There are three main questions that need to be answered as we set our target — what, for how long and how to measure it. Make sure you know “who” is your audience and what do you want to talk about through content marketing.

a. What?
What is your target i.e. what do you want to achieve through this? Do you want to simply increase your reach? Or you want to convert through your content? Whatever your goal may be, one thing is certain: you need to create a “brand” through your content –your content defines your business.

b. For how long?
Then you need to define a timeline for your content marketing strategy. You need to review the performance of your content once in a while, to make necessary changes to your approach etc. So, the next step would be deciding a deadline after which you can evaluate the effectiveness of your strategy.

c. How to measure it?
It is actually the answer to “why are you going for a content marketing strategy?” You should have some metrics (something that can be measured) to evaluate your performance and it will depend on your goal. Social media pages have greatly involved metrics in their business pages to help you keep track of your progress. Various analytics tools like Google Analytics also help you in measuring the performance of the strategy.

2. Form of content to deliver: Do you know what kind of content does your audience like consuming? If no, you need to figure out. Most people try leveraging the various platforms and post all kinds of content like blogs, images, videos, podcasts, but it is always good to know their preference so that you can target them more specifically and you can concentrate on one kind of content more.

3. Scheduling: You can prepare a content calendar. A content calendar means deciding things like which type of content to be posted in which form, on what platform at what time. It helps a person or an organization to be more organized in their way of creating and posting content.

4. Creating: yes, you can finally get to creating content now! Does this need any more explanation? Use your creativity as much as it is relevant to what and who your content represents. You can create a lot of content from a single piece of content, you may convert your blogs into infographics or social media posters or you may convert your videos into blogs and podcasts and snippets of such posts may also be considered as another new piece of content. You may also use your copywriting skills and create new content. Here are various methods and opportunities, the only thing that matters is whether you are willing to do it or not and how much do you succeed in producing and posting content.

5. Analysis: it’s time to measure your metrics. Which form of content is doing better than the others? Well, it’s not that if one form of content is not at par with the other forms, you should eliminate it completely, but you may want to restrict the frequency of such content to save your time and energy. Analyze which form of content is working best for you i.e. which content is helping you achieve your goals in the deadline that was defined in the very first step. And how would you do it? Of course, through the metrics you defined earlier.
The metrics are also very good teachers. You can make certain changes, observe the pattern of your metrics and check if it resonates with your audience or not! That’s how you improve, right? You make mistakes, learn from them and move on.

In my personal experience, I try my best to post at least once a day, every day on my personal social media platforms as well as on the social media pages of my company. When I post on my personal account, I’m usually not so specific about the timings and the type of content; I simply post to present my views about the world. Whereas when I post through my company’s social media, I make sure I know who my audience is and my post is what they are looking for when they are scrolling through their social media. This is because (and it is told by a lot of people) that the same person is on a different social media for a different purpose like, Instagram is used by a majority for entertainment purposes, while LinkedIn is a more professional platform (although the scope of LinkedIn is not limited now, but a lot of people are still not aware of it).

Anyways, content marketing is mostly about experimenting and finding out what works for you. But please don’t forget that the thing that matters the most is “content”. A lot of organizations and individuals forget what their passion was, why did they start posting in the first place, what they actually wanted to talk about and they start posting content that is irrelevant but gets them more likes and engagement.

There is enough room for all if we are sincere and we are here to provide value to the consumers. The final tip of the day is: be consistent if you want a strong social media presence and you want your audience to engage with you online. Giving value is a continuous process.
