Zeno Spotlight: SunnyRadio.US… “Where it’s Always in the 80s”
Music from the 1980s is here to stay and to hear more you can get it on SunnyRadio.US. Based in Little Hocking, Ohio, USA the station began broadcasting on September 1, 2005, and has survived several names and music format changes over the years.
Thirteen years after their first broadcast, the station rebranded as SunnyRadio.US under its present 80s format. With the slogan “Where it’s Always in the 80s”, founder and operator of the station Richard A. McNulty said SunnyRadio.US.here listeners of 80s music can relive the moments.
SunnyRadio.US includes a large rotation of 80s songs from some of the greatest names in Music. Typical artists heard on SunnyRadio.US include: Police, Madonna, Eurythmics, Fleetwood Mac, Queen, Billy Idol, Pat Benatar, Tom Petty, The Cars, Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen, Journey, Joan Jett, Cyndi Lauper, Rod Stewart, Billy Joel, Michael Jackson, Prince, Van Halen, Duran Duran, Earth, Wind, & Fire, Hall & Oates, Paul McCartney, Foreigner and many more.
Richard, who also goes by the name DJ Wheels, says that SunnyRadio.US is different from the typical music station.
“Sure, Pandora, Spotify, and iHeartRadio all offer music online, but we’re refreshingly different. SunnyRadio.US Features unique programming each day and has DJs in the studio programming the music choices, giving you music news and things to talk about,” Richard said.
He added, “From time to time, we’ll throw in some live shout-outs to listeners who message us or check in with us via Facebook. 80s Pop culture hipsters, seasonal latte lovers, stay-at-home dads, mommy-bloggers, kids and cool grandparents can always sing along and enjoy SunnyRadio.US all day long.”
“Whether you’re listening at work, in transit, or in the comfort of your own home you’ll be moving to The BEST 80s Music EVER! We start your morning with The John and Heidi Show and keep every listener happy and upbeat with the perfect mix of 80s music that appeals to all ages!”
The most popular programs are John and Heidi Show that airs Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from 6am-10am and Totally Awesome 80s which airs Saturdays from 10am-3pm.
“I figured it helped them grow and decided to give it a try. The more I read about Zeno I knew it was the way to take my station to the next level”, added Richard.
Richard has Limb-Girdle Type 2B Muscular Dystrophy, which limits his arm movement and he uses a wheelchair. Despite the physical challenge, Richard says he enjoys life and he enjoys running his radio station. He is a strong believer that humans can overcome anything once they set their mind to it. This 57-year-old has been married for 36 years and has two children. He graduated from Glenville State College with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.
He admitted it wasn’t easy when he started exploring the world of internet radio. He faced a good deal of challenges such as getting music, streaming host, music royalties and more. His limited movement also makes using computer difficult at times. “When I started I did research to make sure that I knew what to do. However, being in a wheelchair and limited arm movement there were physical challenges to face and overcome”, said Richard.
Richard had to find software that was easy to use and supported the on-screen keyboard accessibility option in windows. He ended up using a platform that wasn’t as user-friendly as he needed. A breakthrough came once he found Zeno Media, the tools and hosting made streaming easier to control.
Through all of the trials, Richard is determined to find opportunity in every difficulty. With an average of 145 unique visitors per day and growing, he hopes his station will continue to grow and become a terrestrial FM station.
