ZBC#84 [Manager needs to manage]~Managing/プロフェッショナルマネジャー

Today, let me introduce Managing from Zenport Book Club#84 on Jan10th 2018.

Introduction

Harold Geneen, the author of the book and the past CEO of ITT, argues that “Manger needs to manage”.

Even though it’s totally obvious, he said most of the people in management position don’t do management.

Then, what is true management? And what we need to take care in management?

Let’s get it started.

Summary

  • For management, to set goal and achieve it are the most important parts. Even though it’s obvious, but most of the managers would not do that. In that sense, they are not true “manger”.
  • Manager needs to achieve short-term goals, like goal of a quarter. If you cannot achieve the short-term goal, you will never achieve long-term goal, like the goal of one year. If you set the goal, you must stick to the goal.
  • Manager need to eliminate risks in advance. He called it No surprise. Manager should expect what kind of problems will happen in the future, then to solve it before it become obvious in order not let any members be surprised at.
  • Company has two kinds of organization. One is the company itself, and the other is the family of each member. Manager has responsibility to care those two organizations.
  • In order to manage properly, managers need to know his company’s situation enough. If he cannot get current situation properly, he cannot make appropriate decision. For that, heneed to make culture that all members share their information each other.

Discussion

  • The phrase, “Manager need to manage” teach me a lot of things. Sometimes, I become easy on myself, so I need to mange myself first.Management is not a fashion, but responsibility.
  • In terms of no surprise, I totally agree with the idea. If we solve the problem before it becomes obvious, it costs too less. It may seems that manager do nothing, since other people cannot know manager solve the problems, but it’s the most important parts for manager.

Conclusion

Today, I’ve introduced Managing, which mentions how to be a professional manager.

Next, let me introduce Inspired/インスパイアド from Zenport Book Club#85.
