ZBC#89 [State of nature] ~ War in Human Civilization/文明と戦争

Today, let me introduce War in Human Civilization[文明と戦争] from Zenport Book Club#89 on Feb10th 2018.

Why we go to war?

For that issue, Azar Gat, the author of the book, proposed the two view points.

One is that of Thomas Hobbes, that said it is rooted human nature. And the other is that of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, that argued that it is created by cultural invention.

Then, which one is correct? And how the war has been changing in our civilization history?

Let’s get started.

Summary

  • Why do people go to war? Is it rooted in human nature or is it created by cultural invention? That is the issue of this book. For the question, the author answered that it is rooted in human nature. People have been going to war in order to satisfy the desires. One is the desire for survival and the other is for reproduction
  • On the other hand, the war is evolved throughout the history. The key factors are agriculture and nation. Agriculture gave birth to the densely populated organization who has been stayed at same place. It leads to the nation, and nation has organized army. In the end, nation get managed violence, then it has changed the system of war.
  • Now, the world get advantages by begin dependent each other rather than going to war, then that leads to peac

Discussion

  • I agree with the idea why peace is maintained cuz it has more advantages for people rather than going to war. As Henry Kissinger suggested, the peace is kept by power balance, not by the desire for peace. We need to accept the human nature, then discuss how to keep the peace based on the advantages for us.

Conclusion

Today, I’ve introduced War in Human civilization, that describes

Next, let me introduce The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order [文明の衝突] from Zenport Book Club #90.
